2/3 of us would rather be in another job

According to a poll of 2,800 employees in the UK this summer, the chances are that 2/3 of your colleagues would rather be in a different job and 1/3 of them have no loyalty to the firm you work for.

The new research, carried out by SWNS on behalf of online learning provider SkillSoft, shows that 2/3 of employees go to work wishing they were in a different job.  6 out of 10 look at job adverts while at work and 1 in 5 have their details registered with a recruitment agency, headhunter or online job service. 4 out of 10 already have their CV ready to go. Almost a third of those interviewed claim to have no loyalty towards the organisation they work for and 1/4 are planning to move jobs within a year.

The good news is that the survey also revealed that employees become more content at work as they get older, with 1/4 of people in their 40’s saying they are happy in their work compared to just 14% of those in their early 20’s.  And 82% of those at management level say they are happy in their job.

According to the survey, the top 10 reasons for unhappiness at work are:

1. I don’t earn enough money
2. I’m bored with my job
3. The work I do isn’t appreciated
4. The job doesn’t use my talents and skills
5. I don’t like my manager/I don’t like the organisation I work for
6. The company isn’t investing in me by providing proper training
7. I don’t have a proper work/life balance
8. The hours are too long
9. I haven’t been given a promotion in ages
10. I don’t like my colleagues

The right job will enhance your life, whereas an unsatisfying job can lead to frequent job changes, stress, anxiety, poor physical health, and other problems. If you're working in a job that you're passionate about, you can look forward to going to work, feel energised by what you do, feel your contribution is respected and appreciated, feel proud when describing your work to others, enjoy and respect the people you work with, and feel optimistic about your future.
