"Moretolaw: career and lifestyle options - by lawyers, for lawyers "
Read our mission statement and our commitment to being independent.
Next edition: 14 December 2006
A very warm welcome to Moretolaw, a new service for lawyers. Our aim is to open up a new world of options for lawyers in (we hope) an entertaining way.
We think there are too many unhappy lawyers working too many miserable hours. But there must be more to law than that. And there is. Our website it devoted to finding out exactly how much more you can get out of law.
Countless lawyers remain in jobs in which they feel at best indifferent, and at worst seriously unhappy. Lawyers are a conservative bunch and fear change. However, many lawyers do take the plunge into the world outside and find roles which are really interesting or which offer a great work/life balance. Happiness ensues. We want to find these lucky lawyers and tell you all about them.
Continuing on the theme of improving lawyers' lifestyles, we want to explore lawyers' use of recruitment consultants, to make finding the right career path more effective. Lawyers are suspicious of recruitment consultants, so we want to find the best ones and tell you all about them.
Private practice is not automatically private persecution. No, there are some firms out there that really do value work/life balance, in substance, not just form. We want to find these firms and tell you all about them.
We know that there is a lot of information out there about law firms. The benefits of working for a big City firm are well known and obvious, and there are lots of publication that will tell you all about how to apply, what sort of jobs are on offer, how they are ranked, the nature of their clients and so on. Our focus is on aspects of the profession that are not already well-explored.
• features entertaining articles about lawyers who have found excellent legal lifestyles (see Morelegaloptions);
• features entertaining articles about lawyers who have gone off to do something other than law (see Morethanlaw);
• reviews the lifestyle options and culture of law firms themselves, with articles about law firm lifestyle issues and lifestyle news (see Moretolawfirms);
• provides the first ever readers' reviews of legal recruitment consultants, to help lawyers use them more effectively (see Moretorecruitment);
• contains a special jobs section focussing on legal jobs which are more interesting than the norm, or which offer a great work/life balance (see mtl jobs).
To sum up, it is all about making lawyers happy lawyers. Hooray.
Our reviews are going to be independent reviews based on readers' comments. Therefore, we need your help before we can complete these reviews. We are currently working with law firms and recruitment consultants to get the basic facts, and will have as many reviews as possible listed as soon as possible. In the meantime, please enjoy and explore the site and tell us what you think.
We are Moretolaw Limited, a team of City lawyers (and ex-City lawyers). Alex (who was at Herbert Smith for 7 years) set up the site with the help, in particular, of his wife Hester (an in-house City lawyer, previously of Eversheds and Olswang), and also an IT man - Jim Cochrane - an old friend (and not a lawyer). The site is edited on a part-time basis by Matthew Hendin, an in-house City lawyer. There are contributions to the site from a number of other regular lawyer-writers who still work at major City law firms and prefer not to be named.
Of course, much of what is on the site is dependent upon your input so please get in touch with your ideas, reviews and comments. We would also like you to sign up to mtl so that we can alert you to new features on the site (we will not send you any rubbish). We take your privacy seriously (see our privacy policy), so you can contact us in confidence.
Thank you very much
